Our Story: From Farm to Facility
At Moove In Self Storage, our story began on the farm. Founded in 1998 by the Gilliland family from Warriors Mark, PA, we’ve grown from a small, family-operated business to a multi-state self-storage provider. The name "Moove" may seem unusual, but it has a very special origin—one rooted in our farming background. John H. Gilliland, who grew up raising registered Holstein cows, was inspired by the transition from the dairy business to self-storage. Sitting around the family dinner table, he suggested, “Maybe we should call it Moove In Self Storage,” combining their agricultural roots with a new venture. And just like that, the name was born.
Building the Foundation
Our first Moove In Self Storage facility was located in the village of Bald Eagle, just outside of Tyrone, PA. In 1998, we opened our doors with just 54 units, after purchasing land for a mere $13,200. Over the next several years, our footprint grew as we acquired properties in Huntingdon and Lancaster Counties, followed by York County. With a commitment to providing top-quality storage solutions, we steadily expanded across Pennsylvania, reaching neighboring states to meet the needs of an ever-growing customer base.

Expanding Beyond Pennsylvania
Storage expanded beyond Pennsylvania’s borders, first to Maryland in 2014 and New Jersey in 2016. Our reach continued to stretch further, with new facilities opening in Connecticut and Massachusetts in 2019. In 2021, we took another leap forward, entering the Iowa market to serve Midwestern communities. With 27 locations across six states, including Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Iowa, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, we’re proud to provide the same top-notch service to customers across the country.
A Legacy of Hard Work and Fun

At Moove In Self Storage, we stay true to our roots. Our facilities feature unique barn-style architecture with gambrel roofs and cow weather vanes, creating a nostalgic link to our farming heritage. Inside, our brand shines through with steel sheeting, barn lights, and our signature cow spots—symbols of our values of hard work, trustworthiness, and fun. Whether it's part of our day-to-day operations, we're constantly reminded of the importance of treating people right, working hard, and having fun. Thank you to our loyal customers who have helped make us a premier provider of self-storage across the East Coast and beyond.
