Storage Checklist
- If you’ll be accessing some items more frequently, keep them at the front of the unit. No digging or hunting required.
- Speaking of access, creating one or two center aisles can give you easy access to all of your stored items. Stack items along each side and the back, and maybe even one row down the center, and you’ll be able to reach all your boxes and items safely and easily.
- Please, cover those mattresses to keep them clean and safe. Storing them on level surfaces or standing them upright will increase stability and save space.
- Hang blankets, draperies and dress clothes in a wardrobe box or clothing rack to keep them free of wrinkles and easy to access.
- Use protective covers and treat wood surfaces before placing in storage.
Efficient Furniture Storage
- If you're storing tables and other furniture, remove legs and wrap them together. Then store tabletops and sofas on end to save space. You can lean them against one of the storage unit walls.
- Whenever possible, stack dressers and tables top-to-top to save space. Be sure to place a protective blanket or cover between stacked pieces to prevent scratching or other damage.
Things to Keep In Mind
- Excessive swings in temperature can cause damage wood furniture and electronics and may cause vinyl records to warp. Temperature-controlled storage units are the best choice for items that may be sensitive to humidity.
- Old photographs tend to curl over time. To keep them flat, place them between two pieces of cardboard and tape them together. Excessive heat can cause photos to melt, so a temperature-controlled unit may be the best option to keep these irreplaceable items safe.
- Did you know that machine oil can prevent rust on stored metal items? Wipe surfaces with a few drops on a rag before storing and repeat yearly if storing long term.
- Shovels, hoes and rakes are awkward and hard to pack. Try storing them in a trash can! They’ll be more secure, and you’ll be safer, too.

Last but Not Least
- Common sense and state law determine what may be stored. Therefore, never store firearms, illicit drugs or drug paraphernalia, live animals, perishables, liquids, explosives, flammable liquids and fuels, toxic materials or other items that need a controlled environment. That also means you cannot sleep in the storage unit at any time.
- Ask yourself, “Do I really want to store this?” If it’s not important to you, now’s the time to give it away, sell it for extra cash, or donate it.
- Once you’ve carefully stored everything, be sure to use high quality locks on your self storage unit. We recommend disc locks for your protection—they’re harder to cut or break, so just the sight of them can deter would-be vandals.
