Our Best Self-Storage Packing Tips
After choosing your new self storage unit, the next step is packing up your belongings and transporting them safely. It may sound simple but taking a few extra steps to organize and protect your stored items is the best way to keep them in great condition during and after the move. Keep these tips in mind as you get started:
Make a Plan
First, gather up your packing supplies: plenty of sturdy, corrugated cartons, packing paper, bubble wrap, sealing tape and marker pens along with any needed furniture covers. You can purchase all of these supplies in the retail shop located inside the Moove In Self Storage rental office.
Use Same Size Boxes.
When you use the same size boxes, stacking is safer and easier. Try to fill them with similar amounts, too. Bulging cartons can tip when stacked while half-full boxes can easily col-lapse. Empty spaces can be filled with packing paper, bubble wrap, towels or blankets for added stability.
BUT, Pack Heavier Items in Smaller Boxes.
When it comes to heavy items, like books and tools, smaller boxes are best. For easier handling, limit the weight of all cartons to 30 lbs. or less, regardless of size.
Seal Boxes Tightly.
Once you put the care into packing them, seal your boxes tightly with packing tape to prevent dust from entering. Make sure the flaps are closed completely with little or no gaps before you tape them shut. Be sure to check the bottoms of the boxes and re-tape if necessary.

Take Inventory and Label Boxes.
Label boxes on all sides for easy identification. Make an inventory list (and take photos of each box as you pack, too) and make sure to back it up with a copy at your office or another safe location. Clearly mark anything fragile, and place those items on top of heavier, less delicate boxes when arranging your self storage unit.
Wrap Furniture Legs.
The easiest scratch to fix is the one you avoid. Protect furniture legs with protective bubble wrap, furniture covers or pads to prevent dents and scratches. Leave slipcovers on upholstered chairs and cover them with plastic chair covers. Tape or tie bed rails or other companion items together and mark the pieces for easy assembly later. Place covers or plastic bags on mattresses to keep them clean and dry during storage.
Use Empty Spaces to your Advantage!
Don’t overlook the valuable spaces inside dresser drawers and larger appliances like stoves and refrigerators. Use these nooks and crannies to store light items like towels, linens and small, fragile things. Secure items by filling empty spaces with towels or packing paper or taping them securely. Just be mindful of the weight you add, as you could make those pieces heavy and harder to move.
Seal Boxes Tightly.
Secure all movable parts with paper, or wedge and wrap a paper pad around each item for protection. During transport, tape all doors shut but remember to wedge them open for storage.
Pack Books Flat.
Packing books flat protects their spines. Line boxes with protective plastic, if possible, and fill empty spaces with paper.

Use A Lot of Paper!
Use lots of paper to pack dishes and glassware. Place a layer of packing paper inside the bottom and top of each box. Wrap each dish and glass separately and cushion them with crumpled paper.
Use Wardrobe Boxes.
Hang clothes and draperies in wardrobe boxes rather than folding everything. This will prevent excessive wrinkling and make them easier to access later.
Pack lamps individually.
Pack lamps and lamp shades individually, using plenty of clean paper, linens or clothing to pad the box.
Give Mirrors and Artwork Apecial Attention.
What’s the best way to pack a mirror? Once again, paper and soft padding are the keys to success. This goes for paintings, too. Pad them with paper and place in large boxes or protective boxes made especially for mirrors and artwork. Clearly mark boxes as fragile so nobody stacks anything on top when transporting or storing and try not to lay them flat.
Preparation is Key
When looking for self storage close to home, everyone’s needs are different – but nobody wants to worry about their stored items. Invest a little time into packing and preparing carefully up front, and you’ll have every reason to thank yourself later.
