6 Top Tips for Packing like a Pro

6 Top Tips for Packing like a Pro

Max out your space while keeping stress to a minimum.

Whether you’re packing your self-storage unit for a few months or several years, there are a few must-know rules that can help keep the whole process from becoming a headache.  Here are six of the best packing tips from our Moove In Self Storage experts:

Self-Storage Unit

Choose the right size

How much space do you really need? If you’re not sure, get in touch with our experts for some advice. You might get by with a smaller self storage unit than you think. We want every tenant to have a great storage experience, and that means understanding your needs and getting you in the right space.

Label like a rock star

We won’t judge if you want to play air guitar while you label each box and bin thoroughly. You’ll thank yourself later, guaranteed. And if you take photos as you pack boxes and keep an inventory list (either digital or on paper) you’ll be your own biggest fan when you’re able to track down exactly what you need. Bonus points if you include a map or diagram of your self storage unit!

Keep it Clean from the Start

It’s tempting to throw things into storage with the best intentions to deal with them later. But thorough cleaning before you pack and store is the best way to protect everything in your self storage unit.

  • Scrub appliances and kitchen items and thoroughly dry them.
  • Wash and dry clothing, bedding, towels and linens.
  • Vacuum and wipe down anything that might contain dust or pests (they’re not invited!)
  • Most importantly, take care to avoid anything edible in your storage unit. Taking these steps from the start is a little extra work, but it’s way less work than dealing with problems later.

Stack the Right Sizes

When it comes to boxes, it’s all about size and stacking method. Plan ahead, and you’ll avoid taxing your back and toppling things over.

  • Fill smaller-sized boxes with heavier items so the weight stays manageable. Save larger boxes for the light stuff.
  • Fill boxes full so they don’t crush, but not so full that you can’t lift them.
  • Evenly sized boxes stack best.
  • Stack vertically to make the most of your self storage unit’s space, with the heaviest boxes on the bottom for stability. But keep it safe – too high, and you risk falling boxes.

Security is Key

You’ll want to choose a self storage location that offers adequate safety and security systems, but there are things you can do, too. Invest in a quality [disc lock] to secure your unit with confidence. Check on your unit regularly and get to know your site manager. Finally, invest in storage insurance to cover the value of the items you’re storing.

Storage Security

What not to store

Packing tips wouldn’t be complete without a mention of what not to do, and that includes storing things that don’t belong in any self storage unit. Flammable materials, toxic materials, perishable items and food, live plants, pets and people are all prohibited in our storage units. We want everyone to be safe at all times, and we want your belongings to stay safe, too. If you’re unsure about what you can store with us, [contact us] anytime!
