Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA (GSHPA) is a group of 20,000 girls and many adult volunteers in 30 counties throughout Central and Northeastern Pennsylvania, who believe girls can change the world. Girl Scouts began over 100 years ago when founder Juliette Gordon Low believed in the power of every girl. She organized the first Girl Scout Troop on March 12, 1912 in Savannah, Georgia. The Girl Scout mission is to build girls in courage, confidence and character to make the world a better place.

Some adventures the Girl Scouts partake in are helping local animal shelters, going camping and backpacking, learning archery or taking trips to national parks like the Washington Monument. And they get more than just a new adventure. They develop important life skills such as goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics to name a few.
Ellen Kyzer, is the CEO of Girl Scouts in PA. She was appointed as GSHPA’s CEO in January 2016. Kyzer’s resume includes over 17 years of leadership experience in the nonprofit and fundraising field. As a child, Ellen was a Girl Scout from Pike County who fondly remembers the impact the organization and the people involved in it had on her.
“My time as a Girl Scout gave me exposure to strong women and that is an important part of what we represent as an organization,” said Ellen. “I’m excited for the opportunity to influence young women and girls. Empowering women leaders starts with mentoring and developing girls as leaders from an early age.”
If you want to get involved, you can volunteer to become a troop leader, help coordinate the annual cookie sale at the troop level, help the girls explore nature at camps or be a community lead. You can volunteer a few hours, a few weeks, a few months or more. As a volunteer, you will show them they can achieve more than they ever thought possible, all while having fun.
