FEATURE NON-PROFIT: Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary

By Sarah Clark, Certified Self Storage Manager

While driving around in Lancaster County, it’s hard to miss the Forgotten Friend’s “Super Green Turtle Machine” van. Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization, founded in 2004 by Jesse Rothacker, that rescues and adopts small reptiles like turtles, snakes, lizards and even alligators that can no longer be cared for. Rothacker’s passion for reptiles grew from a personal investment into a nonprofit when he discovered many pet rescue organizations did not accept or offer reptiles for adoption.

Since their beginning, Forgotten Friend has grown to a dozen volunteers to help with events and work closely with the Lancaster Herpetological Society. They have been able to rescue numerous species of reptiles since their start including a special guy named Larry the Nile Monster. Larry is an Ornate Nile Monitor Lizard who even has his own YouTube video!

The organization also focuses on educating children and the community about the different species of

reptiles, their varying environments and essential care required for ownership. Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary has been featured on television programs such as Good Day PA on ABC 27 and radio segments like the Kids Cookie Break on WJTL 90.3. They have also hosted events for children at churches, schools, libraries and even birthday parties.

The “Super Green Turtle Machine” is not only equipped to transport reptiles safely, but it’s also decked out with a sound system and external lights for parades, like the Manheim Parade where Forgotten Friend was recently featured. To book a show for your event, simply email them at info@forgottenfriend.org.

If you’re interested in adopting a new reptile friend, you can see the animals available on their Petfinder page. For those who are not ready for a new reptile friend, Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary is always accepting donations that help provide a permanent home and food for more than fifty reptiles and a temporary home for dozens of reptiles waiting to be adopted. You can donate through their website or mail your donation to:
